Light Wing Ultralight Shoes
A pair of casual shoes that weigh less than three small lemons? Yep, and in your choice of five colors. But not for long.
In August, our post “The Many Faces of Tyvek” included, among other things, some pretty cool limited edition shoes made from the fabric that weighed in at under 300 grams a pair. Back then, the Unbelievable Testing Laboratory’s (UT.LAB) Kickstarter project ended up raising US $142,197 (947% of its funding goal) to create the Light Wing “Pencil” shoes. After the project was completed, US $5,032 of the funds were donated to Teach for America to help education in low-income communities.
Since that first run of 2,013 pairs of shoes was so successful, the UT.LAB has decided to do a second round of the waterproof ultralight shoes. This time, instead of a single color scheme, the Light Wing “Trainer” will be available in five different colors (red, blue, gray, black, and white) for US $68 a pair.
The catch? Only 300 pairs of each color will be produced and pre-orders will only be accepted for 10 days. Why so short? According to press materials, it is to ensure that they can get manufacturing done and products shipped by December 14 to arrive on customers’ feet before the holidays. That is pretty aggressive.
So far, the gray Light Wings are in the lead. If you want to try some of these, visit UT.LAB’s online store where you can also read more about the company and their goals.
